Hello, my name is Mercy Otis Warren. I have recently had the opportunity to speak with a student of your time. She explained to me that she was doing a biographical essay about me (Yes, me! Really, I never would have thought... ) and was finding too many inconsistencies in the literature available on this "World Wide Web" she has been searching through. I honestly am completely befuddled by her explanation of an "internet" but agreed to go along with what she was saying. Her proposal was that I tell her about my life so that she could create an true source of knowledge on this "internet"for the other students out there who are also encountering such troubles. Now, truly, I do not comprehend most of what she has explained to me, especially why my life should be so important, but as I said, I have agreed to participate in this strange project. Seeing as I am a writer myself, I do understand how important words can be, so perhaps these will help aid these future generations.
Now that I have explained the purpose of this - I believe this good student calls it a "website"? - allow me to introduce myself. I have a great passion for writing. During the American Revolution, I wrote a great number of poems, dramas, and other historical accounts expressing the patriotic views that I and many Americans share. Of course, females have not always had as much freedom of speech as, from what I understand, they do in your time. I did have a great many supporters in my family and friends, but society was simply not accustomed to a female who possessed such strong opinions. Because of this, many of my works were published anonymously. Although it was a struggle to face such hostility from certain people, I was able to express my thoughts on our politics through words, and that in itself is very liberating, even when done anonymously.
The student has told me that my works are highly regarded by the people of your time. It is very flattering to hear such things, I must say. Of course, the focus must always remain on the opinions stated within those works, because they express the values our American people. Those values should always be held up in utter importance.
I would love to tell you more of my world, so please, click on one of the "tabs." (I believe that is what they are called) I look forward to becoming better acquainted with you!
